Kazakhstan-born, Russian-based couturier and street-style star Ulyana Sergeenko showed her Haute Couture SS16 luxurious collection in Paris on Wednesday. It is only her seventh collection to date but she has already taken the Haute Couture scene by storm.
Each dress had different style and colour palette, from pastel to rich black and red tones. Heavy fabrics mixed together with leather corsets or golden embroideries, and a pastel purple dreamy dress with silver thread looked kingly styled together with statement hats and chokers. Accessories, jewellery and embroideries all perfectly added up to the final result. It was a mixture of two eras: 20th century Russia and Soviet 80s, a favourite comeback of several designers this season, including J. W. Anderson.
Looks were finished with heavy smoky eye makeup, natural colour lipsticks and tied up hair. Models stepped onto the catwalk certainly looked like real queens in an air of self- confidence. The same could be said about the front row at the show, featuring Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova, socialite Ksenia Sobchak alongside burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese and a majority of the senior press. Designer’s official Facebook page was updated with Sergeenko and her guests posing for the cameras.
The collection itself received mixed reviews from international fashion critics. Nicole Phelps at Vogue.com, for example, had a slight liking of the 80s interpretations. Telegraph’s Lisa Armstrong attributed Sergeenko’s success to her social skills: ‘What Sergeenko lacks in formal training, she makes up for with conviction.’
