Somewhere by the Black Sea, that’s where your Cruise season starts. True to life – Odessa Fashion Days is one of the best locations to showcase Cruise collections for aspiring designers – at least the setting is perfect.
Ukrainian designers were met by the press and general public for the 7th season in a row. Mercedes-Benz OFD has featured fast-growing Ukrainian designers such as Anna K, Elena Burba and SSUR alongside young designers such as ZOV Design, Kaprsamun, Kristina As and Pakhtusova.
What did we like? The diversity of models. Young girls at the Anna K party – just as her customers, who are teenagers. Healthy looking beachwear models at LUT Show. A variety of models at SSUR. The models were not the same faces and bodies you would normally see on the catwalks of London Fashion Week. They looked like real people, someone you would expect to see on the streets of Ukraine. Funny enough, the lack of diversity, that major fashion weeks are often accused of, is definitely not a problem in Odessa.
What did we miss? Given the size of the local Ukrainian fashion industry, MBOFD attracted just a handful of interesting designers. We are happy to see the names we know already (like Anna K or Elena Burba) but we would really like to see more interesting fresh young designers such as Pakhutsova.
